Chicago's residential stock is unlike anything in the suburbs around it. The bungalow belt, the two-flats and the greystones were built between roughly 1900 and 1940 on narrow lots, with solid masonry exteriors, wood framing inside, and floor plans laid out for how people lived a century ago. They are built well. They are also full of small kitchens, one bathroom for the whole floor, and mechanical systems that have been added to rather than replaced.
That combination is most of what remodeling in the city actually is: opening up a closed-off kitchen, carving a second bathroom out of an odd back bedroom, finishing a garden level, dormering an attic, or replacing supply lines and circuits that have quietly aged out.
